If you own a fleet of vehicles, chances are you are delivering or towing something. Whether your vehicle is a car, truck, van, or SUV, you are going to have to make sure that it is fully operational. That means taking your vehicle through a scheduled maintenance check on a regular basis.
In cases like this, many business owners are often caught up in the day-to-day operations to give much thought into what exactly needs to be inspected in their fleet of vehicles. A basic oil change is certainly needed, as it does a general sweep-through of a lube, oil and filter job as well as refilling your fleet’s fluid levels, and detecting other potential problems .
What a basic oil change may not do is check your suspension system.
What is a Suspension System?
A vehicle suspension system is the technology that separates the bumpy ride of the wheel and horse carriage to the smooth transportation we enjoy today. There are two main purposes for a vehicle’s suspension system. The first one is to have the ability to carry or tow enough weight without buckling or swaying while keeping the tires on the road. The other is to have a suspension system do all of that while maintaining a relatively motionless drive with zero to minimal bumps and vibrations within the passenger compartment.
The laws of physics generally makes these two purposes oppose one another, but with the right amount of balance, it is possible, as it have proven to be in almost any vehicle you have driven. The suspension system is all about balancing timing, precision, and coordination. It stabilizes your vehicle while turning corners, braking, and acceleration. Without it, there will be imbalance and that can be a dangerous thing.
Organizing a Suspension Inspection for Your Fleet
Just as you would schedule your fleet of vehicles for an oil change, you also need to schedule them for a suspension inspection. For work vehicles, it is recommended to check your suspension every 1,000 – 3,000 miles depending on how often your vehicles are operated. For business owners managing a fleet of vehicles, this should be the minimum.
Operating a work vehicle is a liability. That’s why it’s important to make sure that your car, truck, van, or SUV is equipped to support the expected amount of weight that will reduce the effect of shock forces, maintain the correct ride height and wheel alignment, and most importantly, keep the wheels on the ground!
